my male gerbil Zero has recently started having labored breathing as he sleeps. I became worried, so i took him to a doctor& got a clean bill of health. He was fine for 3 days before he started labored breathing again. Now its a constant thing and I'm becoming more& more stressed! Now, he can't open one eye and the other bulges slightly. as if this if this isn't enough, all the vets i went to said he was healthy!! I don't understand! his brother who live in the same tank as him is as healthy as can be and his eyes are normal! What's happening to Zero!!! Help plezz!

Hi. I`m not entirely sure to be honest, but laboured breathing can be a respiratory ailment or another secondary infection. Heart problems can also cause this symptom in rats, but I`m not sure about gerbils. Where are you in the world?
If your not happy, call one of the vets you saw and tell them Zero has something going on even though all the vets you saw told you otherwise. If one eye is bulging and the other is`nt functioning properly, it sound to me as though something is wrong? Unless his eye is stuck through producing porphyrin, which is a red secretion from a gland behind the eye?
Check everything in their cage/tank that might be a cause just to rule that out. Is he making any noises at all when he breathes? Is he acting normally and eating, drinking?

Zero's nose is bleeding today. I wiped it up and everything and put him in a cage by himself. There's corn cob bedding in the cage so he can breath easier but im still so worried.
