Yesterday I went into Petco after work and discovered that they were having their annual dollar-per-gallon tank sale, so my boys now have a much bigger tank now! I was going to get the 29-gallon but it wouldn't fit in my car so I had to settle for the 20. But it's a very noticeable upgrade from their previous 10-gallon setup. Hans and Franz have a lot more room to burrow and do all of their ornery gerbil antics I also had a brief lapse in sound judgement and got a long-haired, sable-colored Syrian hamster to put in my 10-gallon tank. I've named him Pip and he's a sweet little guy. I'm giving him some time to adjust and then we will work on becoming best friends.

Hey there! NICE!! Wish my stores would do that!
20 gallons in my opinion is the largest I think anyone should go for a pair of gerbils. Its just enough room where each gets about a 10 gallon to themselves without the threat of possible territory claiming. I've kept a foursome in a 20 gallon and the brothers did just fine till ripe old age - though granted, that doesn't happen often. As it stands, sadly, we had someone on this forum recently experience having their gerbils de-clan over the space of a 40 gallon.
So to be fair, what really is giving them so much space for? Remember, they are burrowing creatures and SNUG is SAFE for them. It is it really for US because WE want to give them all sorts of levels and a ka-gillion things to do that honestly, they don't really need and frankly, wouldn't have in the wild.
Just something to think about. As it stands though, I would never recommend keeping a pair in anything LESS than a 10 gallon.

That's me who had the boys Declan in the 40! (Darn you petco $1/gallon sale!)
I took advantage of the sale and got myself a 15 the other week when my boys got into it (same footprint as a 20 just 4 inches shorter). I must say I love it. Easy to lift and clean and I can finally afford to purchase and use the nice clean and cozy and carefresh bedding. Boys are still active and loving as ever.
Good luck with your new setup! Been debating about getting the 20 while they are still on sale to add a few extra inches of bedding. Hmm...

I just wanted to say that your syrian should be in at least a 40 gallon as that is the bare minimum for hamsters. I encourage you to do some more research on them as well. Victoria Rachel and Erins animals have great videos as well as the hamster hideout forum! On the note of not going too big I think that its good to give a pair 20-29 gallons!

That's great I'm sure your gerbils will love their new setup but a ten gallon tank just doesn't have enough room for your hamster. They need 450 sq inches and a large wheel, at least 2 hides, chew toys, foraging toys and food and water of course. I would recommend a 40 gallon but bin cages are quite cheap and there are some good cages out there.
