Long post but I would appreciate any help
I posted on here last week about my gerbil with a respiratory infection. It wasn’t getting better so I took her back to the vets and she was given baytril, loxicom and bisolvon. She improved in a few days and seemed back to normal. But yesterday I found her crouched in the middle of the cage, eyes half shut, breathing very heavily. I panicked and thought she was dying, she went into her house and stayed there curled up for a few hours.
She came out a couple of times during the day where I gave her some water and tried her with baby food but she didn’t like it. That night she had curled up on her side and again I thought she was passing away.
But this morning she is still here bless her, I fed her some oats and seeds, she has been running about her cage a little bit. She has red stuff coming out of her eyes which she has never had before. She still is breathing heavily, eyes not open fully. I don’t know what to do, is this the end for her? How long is this going to go on, would it be kinder to put her to sleep?
I’m so confused how she was okay one day and so bad the next. Does anybody have any suggestions on what I should do for her. I don’t want this dying process to last for ages if she is going to be suffering. Thank you
Has she been drinking? Because I know that gerbils can often look very scruffy because they haven't been drinking at all... I thought I was going to lose my one boy too the one time... it's good that she's eating but perhaps if you haven't seen her drinking, try giving her a syringe with sugar water in it just to boost her up a bit... difficult situation since she had her infection... I'd try the sugar water though, just a few drops... I've had gerbils and other animals alike that I thought weren't going to make it and it was the sugared water that saved them I'm certain of it... worth a try I'd think.
Good luck
