You mentioned bags under the eyes earlier and it rang a very vague bell, today I was re-reading this article when I saw photos of a Gerbil with 'baggy' eyes, I think it was this I was vaguely remembering, does it look like your Gerbil?

If you are referring to the rescue gerbil "Rose", I'd say Pippin looks like a lesser version of the extreme pictures on the left (she is nowhere near as bad off as those) - I see they mention they don't use woodshavings as well as sawdust. I use woodshavings for my gerbils and my guinea pigs. Maybe this could be the problem? I don't know about using "megazorb" as I have heard it can be quite dusty, I don't really know about any other bedding types in much detail, I'm sure there are a lot of threads on this forum about it so I'll head over to the bedding section and spend an hour or 2 on all the threads there :P

Yes Rose Yea could be because of wood shavings, Woodgreen also say they don't use it as it can cause allergic reactions, that's why I went with Hemp, seems to be one of the safest options. I also avoided Megazorb because of quite a few reports of dust, and apparently any of the paper beddings will tend to smell before the wood/plant ones. Amazon reviews are worth reading for beddings, although I had little luck with Hempbed on that front! I took a gamble, so I don't know what it's like yet, but I'm about to find out (probably tomorrow) as I now have the tank

Now, I'm not sure about most of this stuff here- but I can help with the red ”bloody substance”. I found this on another thread here. ”The red stuff is a substancebe called poryphin. It’s excreted when the gerbil is upset or allergic to something. Red noses are another sign, and this can lead to a respiratory infection if left untreated.” Hi, how can the poryphin be treated? I haven't noticed Pippin being upset or allergic, what would that look like? She doesn't have a red nose- is it the red nose or the poryphin that can lead to a respiratory infection (sorry, just a little confused and worried :S). Thanks Actually poryphin is produced because of stress not an allergic reaction. that might give you some more clues as to whats going on. the video did look like a scuffle but it didn't seem worrying to me
