Hemp has a much lower dust content than carefresh and it’s not in clumps like the carefresh, it also smells quite nice and it’s wayyyy cheaper. But there are pros and cons of all beddings and it really depends on what you need/want out of it. Hemp needs to be mixed with something else like hay as it doesn’t hold burrows very well on its own. (In my experience)

The Hempbed hemp I used seems to hold burrows fairly well even before much hay was mixed in, although I can't tell how much, it was early on in being in their cage. This photo is on the 5th day they were in their, they excavated a large chamber in the corner of the cage, I'm amazed it didn't collapse!
As for how much dust it had, it's hard for me to judge as I haven't used anything else yet, but I poured in about 3/4 of 15kg bag in one go, their was a little dust, but considering how much I put in I don't think it was much.
I avoided carefresh as I'd heard it can be very dusty.

Well lmy gerbils haven't got the art of making tunnels even after 2 years!Ruby tries to make them and then Topaz destroys them.😂 They always have hay so it wouldn't be a problem if they could actually make tunnels unfortunately it appears mine are thick! I'll look into it. Thanks

Hempbed, the Hemp I used for my 1st cage filling, although my bale was made in the NL, the company is based in Canada. I don't suppose their prices are better for you?

Where do I find hemp? Is it Amazon ?
Also the gerbils seem to be getting on fine and have spend 2 nights in their cage. All 3 curl up together in their bed so hopefully all will be well from now on.

hempbed can be found on zooplus (online shop) or aubiose (another hemp) can be found by local horse suppliers - aubiosse is usually cheaper (around £10 for 20kg, hempbed is usually £15 for 14kg/150l)
you can also get aubiose on amazon/ebay but its usually more expensive than a horse supplier and postage cost (20kg weight for the largest bale)

So ive been looking for hemp.but all I can see is hemp oil and cbd. Oh and cannabis. Notvsure this is the right stuff. Where do I find it?
By the way the 3 girls seem to be getting on well now so hopefully whatever caused the fallout is sorted. They seem to be happily sleeping together and grooming each other.

I got Hempbed from Ebay (Zooplus didn't have any at the time, or currently), it was cheaper than Amazon at the time (£18 for 15kg delivered), but yea if you can get it locally you'll save a load. Next time I'll be buying Aubiose from a local animal feed suppliers, (Rokers, £9.75), only found out about it after I bought the 1st lot.

If you just searched "hemp" you won't get the right results because its a plant used for many purposes. Better to search for "hemp pet bedding" or similar, or a specific type of hemp bedding (aubiose), or search on a pet website (zooplus, rodipet...) Glad they're getting on well, grooming and sleeping are good signs :D

Brilliant. Thanks I'll start looking on all the sites. I thought there had to be a better way when I started getting oils etc on there!

Hmm, soft compared to what though? Compared to paper products? No, it's harder than that, you will need a nesting material with it. My Gerbils have had no problems with it in the month they've had it though. If I grab a handful and squeeze really hard then yes it is somewhat painful, but with normal pressure it's not sharp or painful at all, I don't know if that helps! lol
Perhaps gerbilord can give you a comparison to other beddings, she has more experience than me.
