Hello!
Was just wondering if anyone had any advice on long time male gerbils that have now had to be separated.
They lived just the two of them and occasionally had chasing episodes that we passed off as battles for dominance but the past two weeks, they'd been having chases on a daily basis. Although they were sleeping together in-between these episodes, the times they were on good terms was getting shorter and shorter so we decided to separate them for the sake of the gerbil being chased. The chases often were sparked over food seemingly (although, their food situation hasn't changed for over 2 years now) although we can't confirm this for sure.
Their cages are next to each other and they seem to be trying to get back to each other but when we tried separating them temporarily before, they ended up immediately going back at it, seemingly worse than before.
Does anyone have any advice on how to keep separated cage mates as happy as possible under the circumstances?
Thank you in advance!

I had to do this with my two boys earlier this year, sad to see them separated but Tristan was scared, even though he is the dominant, when Theo chased him. Just give them enough to do, esp. a wheel and try to spend one on one time with them- give them enough bedding to dig in and boxes and if they are okay with it, put them so they can see each other so they don't feel all alone. If you have a safe area, let them run freely but only if safe and you can watch them.
