Clover will be 3 in about two months and he's started to lose mobility in his back legs and no longer uses his wheel. Would it be a good idea to switch him from the 40 gallon to the 29 gallon? He sleeps most of the day other than free roam and feeding time so I doubt he will miss the space. He also is much less active at night. The 29 gallon is closer to the ground and much easier to monitor so it's easier for me. What do you think?

I always downgrade my older gerbils once they become less active. I mean it is great to have them still moving around in straight lines and on flat ground for circulation and other things - but no need to really height-based set ups and extensive tunnels and stuff.
Like a nice bungalow?
Everything they need but without all those steps and nothing too far away. Easier to heat if you need to as well.
