The worst thing with water bowls is when a gerbil drops the end of a long piece of toilet paper into the bowl, so that all the water is wicked out, along the paper and onto the surrounding bedding. It almost feels intentional.

Yes, that is always a pain! And I think it is their own doing - apart from that time one pair of mine actually wicked all their water into their own nest through an elaborate plaited network of kitchen roll between the two...
Twits...

Lily looking good this evening. I wonder if she has any idea of the amount of worry she causes.

I was wary of opening this thread when I saw an update for it, but fantastic and amazing to hear Lily has bounced back so well and so quickly!!

Not quite the same thing, but when Blake is in the left side of the tank he likes to bury his food (which is on top of the house), but then he forgets it's there!! I know because when I uncover it later on, he'll immediately eat some, and then bury it again a few minutes later! Twit! (I so need to sort out there new tank!).

I know because when I uncover it later on, he'll immediately eat some, and then bury it again a few minutes later! Twit! (I so need to sort out there new tank!). That is quite funny! This is how Lily was on Saturday night and on Sunday. In that second one she was trying to climb up the mesh at the end. Obviously she fell over but you have to admire her for even trying! Looking back at those videos I think an inner ear thing actually makes more sense than a stroke. I'm not sure why I initially thought stroke. I think at the beginning she seemed weaker on one side. And Lily wasn't so similar to Storm after all because I don't think Storm was leaning to one side so much, he was just weak and unbalanced. Maybe I saw the similarities and overlooked the differences. This is interesting given that she seems to have had vertigo-type episodes in the past (the "thrashing" episodes, when she can't balance).

Yea I could see why your thought it was a stroke, I couldn't tell well whether it was weakness on the left side, or a balancing problem. She was certainly strafing to the left though in the 1st video!. Btw, I used the wrong word in my previous post, I meant to say wary (anxious) not weary (tired of), my bad (I'll edit it).

Oh I knew what you meant Markpd! I've never heard the word strafe before.

Ah that's ok then I pinched it from the video gaming world, lol, more typically used there, but it looks exactly like she was doing! (the side stepping).

Well you learn something new every day! I've started Lily on the diuretic this evening as she got really bloated around her lower abdomen. Her weight went from 85g to 93g. It came up too fast for ovarian cysts I think (also she'd have to be really unlucky to have come down with those as well as everything else) and she's getting breathless after exertion. She's more tired than usual too but fortunately does not appear to be suffering. She still loves her food and she potters around the cage when she isn't resting. I think her free roaming days might be behind her but then again Lily is full of surprises. Also she has a habit of proving whatever I say on here wrong (like in October when I thought she was dying, and then on Saturday when I thought I might have to put her to sleep) so I'm saying this hoping to be wrong. As for the inner ear issue/stroke/whatever it was that happened to her on Saturday, she's 95% better. She holds her left back foot slightly oddly and her balance is not perfect. But it's not affecting her mobility or ability to get around. She doesn't fall over anymore. Also I renamed this thread again since Lily hasn't had swallowing issues in months. The thread has taken quite a turn since then.

Quite the ongoing story! Glad she's doing ok atm Btw, wouldn't holding a foot slightly oddly imply a stroke, rather than ear related balance problems? Anyway, glad she's bounced back so well , regardless.

Yes, I agree about the foot implying a stroke. It's very confusing and I keep going back and forth between stroke and inner ear issue. I'm not really sure what to think now, only that something happened to her than made her very unbalanced for a couple of days.
Daisy has just tried to steal a pea from Lily, but Lily managed to fend her off twice (at which point Daisy gave up) so she's got plenty of fight left in her yet!

Lily's not getting any better unfortunately. The diuretics don't seem to be working. Heart failure can cause reduced oxygen supply to the kidneys, which can cause kidney failure, which can cause diuretics to not work (because the kidneys just can't process all that fluid), and possibly could also explain the crystals she's had in her urine. She's still very pear-shaped and her weight is up to 96g.
Her breathing does seem better though. It's barely laboured at all.
She's sleeping most of the time but still has a good appetite. Given she seems to have quite advanced heart failure, she might not see the New Year but I'm giving her all the food she wants, she's got a heated nest and Daisy for company so I hope she'll be comfortable. She doesn't appear to be in discomfort. It's impossible to know for sure of course, but I don't see any sign of it. She isn't restless when she sleeps.
So it's not exactly good news but it's not very bad news either. I know she's going to die soon so all I can hope is that she doesn't suffer.

Enjoy each day with Lily and know you are doing everything you can for her. Take care and may she have more days than you hope she has with you. Been here many times and just stay strong. Tammy
