Here are 3 pictures of my gerbils cage. I was just wondering if there was anything I should add. I have a large mason jar, toilet paper tubes, a hay block for ripping apart, coconut hide, grapevine wood, and a large apple wood branch in the tank. I put a wheel, sand bath, water bowl, food bowl, water bottle, rocks, and some small sticks in the topper. I used a bendable bridge and a unused tile from my bathroom in the tank. There is also a large bendable bridge that is buried in the bottom of their cage that is just a tad bit covered up at the moment.

Looks great - all the usual things in there that they love - the only thing you haven't got that they might like as I have seen it on some other people's tanks is a hanging bed/coconut shell. Sometimes it is a nice sensation to be swinging - and you have the space in your topper.
Hang it low enough to jump in but high enough to not hit their head on it! Not sure if all gerbils like that rocking motion - but just an idea if you already have a spare coconut shell or similar?

I do have two and I got them for Christmas but they have already chewed the string that hangs off on both of them. I have some string I can use to try and hang it back up.

You need a chain for that!

betty, just out of interest are these hanging beds you're talking about made of fabric? I'd like to have a hanging bed but if they were made of fabric, they'd have chewed it all in days! Also, I love your cage pipsqueak! I'm not sure on what you could add apart from what betty's said, it's really nice!

Hollow logs! I use cork ones, although they randomly like to chew it, so they only last a few months, but my boys love to use them . I've tried to find hollowed wooden logs, but the pine one I got, the holes are too small and they can't get through it. I have seen photos of hollowed birch logs which are larger enough for them to pass through, but I wasn't able to find any for sale (of any wood for that matter). Nice setup btw

The hanging beds come in all sorts of materials, shapes and sizes, and if you have your own chain and mesh lid - you can make it out of whatever you want? I think it is more about the rocking that they like, so you can mix it up.
I have used material beds with older gerbils who don't tend to chew them up - but there are plastic ones, wooden ones, coconut ones, leather ones and I am sure using thick cardboard corners could work short term too.
I am not sure suspending a ceramic one would be a good idea though!!!

That's cool! I might have to try to make my own Is there a risk that they would get paws stuck though? edit: I've just remembered I have a hanging bridge which I haven't used in a while, they like climbing on that though, you could get something like that PipSqueak?

I have a long bridge that can be hanged but I use it as a ladder to my topper. It also wouldn't attach to their lid.

Ahh okay. I meant one like this tinyurl.com/tud83umr that they can climb on and it rocks when they step on it, but that's fine!

I will look into it but might not be able to get the exact one since I live in the US. Did your gerbils chew it at all. I'm a bit worried that any bit that is not solid wood they might chew. Like the bits with string.

Its not directly related to the hanging bed but my gerbils do chew string, meaning I had to remove their hanging bridge because they had broken the parts connecting the rungs. Metal chains should be fine though

That looks exactly like the one my boys have, the string ladder was gone in a day or 2 (they loved chewing the hessian string! lol). The rope hoop is still there and only slightly nibbled, it's been there since September last year.

Like the bits with string. Mine wasn't the exact one - it just looked the same, they are in most UK pet shops, but there are plenty online if you can't get one in a shop! I think my past gerbils did chew the string off eventually, but they didn't eat any and I took it out of the tank when they chewed it off. Perhaps you could cut off the string/rope if you felt safer that way?
