Hi all we will be first time gerbil owners so have been reading lots of your threads with interest and lots of useful info and tips. We have been looking at second hand tanks that have had fish or reptiles kept in them previously so wanted to ask what's the best thing to clean them with. Also as other animals breed their own bacteria etc could there be any risk to the gerbils health? Thanks in advance for any advice.

As long as you are able to rinse the tank well, I would clean with diluted bleach to ensure any bacteria is killed. Then rinse very well, especially along the silicone, and pat dry. There should be no remaining bleach smell.

Yes, I agree with Thelodar. As long as you disinfect and scrub the tank really well, then It should be okay. I used my old hermit crab tank as my gerbil cage and they seem to do just fine in it.

My gerbils have been in 2 second hand tanks, I had them in a 55 gallon and then saw a larger tank for sale really cheap so had to upgrade! Just clean thoroughly and rinse thoroughly. There’s so many people reselling fish tanks and terrariums where I live, I think it’s a great way to get a larger enclosure for less money. Sometimes you do need to diy a lid though.
