Lily has a little wart on her right lower eyelid. I first noticed it in December but looking back at old photos from as long ago as October, I can see the beginnings of it. During that time it's shrunk down a couple of times so that I thought it was going away and then it's come back up again, but it doesn't seem to be actually growing. Does anyone know anything warts in gerbils? Do they go away eventually? It doesn't seem to bother her at all. A vet could probably remove it and do a biopsy but I think due to the location it would have to be under anaesthetic and I don't really want to put her through that if it's just a wart. The first photo shows its usual size. The second photo shows how it looks when it shrinks down.

What adorable ear hair she has!
As for the growth - from the images it looks more like it is a fluid-filled pocket rather than a traditional wart - but not sure if that is just the images. It is WAS fluid-filled this might explain the changes in size?
I often get blister pockets on the same surface of my eyes - (but I am a sadist and scratch them off with the ends of the tweezers - not that I suggest you do this with Lily!!!) so perhaps a vet could easily 'pop' it if it is just a blister-type thing?
However, if it isn't bothering her of getting bigger - perhaps just wait and see?

Thank you. I hadn't considered that it could be more like a cyst as it looked so wart-like but that would make sense.
I think I will wait and see. I've never seen either her or Daisy pay any attention to it so I don't think it hurts or bothers her and the thought of any kind of implement around a wriggly gerbil's eye, even from the vet, scares me.
And, yes she has lovely ears! It took her a couple of years to grow into them since they stick out quite a lot.

betty I think you were right about it being a cyst. Today I had to wake Lily up to clean the cage out and she had some yellow stuff coming from the lump. It didn't seem like pus, more like keratin. I wonder if perhaps that happens often and usually she washes it off before she emerges, but of course today she had a bit of a rude awakening (she was not happy with me!)

Hopefully - this is it FINALLY bursting - a one off rupture - and once it has settled down - the lump will be gone?

Hopefully, but I've just checked and it's still there, though a little deflated. I think whenever I've had a keratin cyst they've gone away eventually but it took a few months.
