Gerbils I think still sleep together. But they do sprawl around the cage more and more frequently but I can’t get a good look because every time I stand up to look they stop what their doing to look at me. They run on the wheel together but one of them “grooms” the other while the other one try’s to get away. Is it normal for gerbils to wrestle so much? I am terrified of a declan!!!!

They won’t cuddle..... Maybe I’m just really stressing out and I need to go to bed but I am almost in tears! If one try’s to go in the burrow they wrestle and one of them comes out!!

How are they now Mochi? Perhaps one or both were in heat last night which can cause chasing and mounting.

Yes, they are back to normal now. That was definitely the problem, but why do they act like that when they are in heat?

When they're in heat they have a very strong instinctive urge to mate and in the absence of a male, a female in heat will try to mount any gerbils that are around, even other females. This can involve some chasing and squeaking. If she's very persistent, the other gerbil may get fed up and try to box with her or pin her down. They might not want to cuddle because they're feeling too hormonal and restless. They seem to be more grouchy and prone to squabble when in heat and things can get quite tense sometimes. I would suggest just watching them and if things get too rowdy, give them a distraction like some food or cardboard. Also avoid giving them more excuses to squabble, so perhaps avoid out of cage time or new toys or special treats if they're in heat and tense.
My gerbil Lily is total brat when she's in heat and will pester and wind up Daisy for hours, so that things can get very tense sometimes. It's never escalated beyond the pinning and wrestling and angry grooming though. They're always back to cuddling in the morning.

Thanks so much! Yep, I think my Snickerdoodle at least was in heat last night. She was being quite the brat. And S’more wouldn’t stand it! Thankfully they are back to normal for now...🤣 If normal is what you would call those weirdos!
