Is there such a thing as a running wheel that can hang from the top of a glass tank? Does anyone have any recommendations or know where I can buy such a thing?

I've recently had a wooden wheel modified to hang from a topper. It's this wheel, with four threaded inserts set into the underside of the base. I don't know the technical details of how that was done as I asked my dad to do it for me but I could ask him. Make sure the threaded inserts you choose aren't longer than the thickness of the base. Then I found some threaded bolts (mine were shorter than these, I found them in my box of random nuts and bolts) and washers. The topper is the barred part of a hamster cage and the wheel is just bolted to the bars. Alternatively I have also hung a plastic wheel with a metal frame from the top of a cage using zip ties, but that was for a hamster. It was very secure (the wheel was very light though) and gerbils would probably struggle to chew through zip ties on a tank lid, but they may chew a plastic wheel.

I'm not sure. It's a 20-gallon tank, so I guess something big enough for them to be comfortable on, but not something so big that it takes up all of their space.

I had a wire mesh wheel which I used wire hooks to hang from the side.

I would steer clear of wire mesh wheels, they can cause feet injuries.
cutie As big as you can fit then I guess, btw if you fitted a cage topper that would give you much more height. In UK and US sites that I've seen, usually the min recommended is 8", with bigger being better, in Germany they often say 12" is a minimum! When I posted in a German forum mentioning that I had a 10" wheel, I took some heat for it being 'too small'! They claimed it would hurt their backs, their was no real evidence supplied/shown that a 10" wheel could do that, but they did show 2 vet sites that stated the min should be 12", and that the fact that 1 of my gerbils runs with his head outside the edge of the wheel is an indication it's too small for him. For now I've stuck with the 10" wheel, but if I had to buy another I'd go for a 12".
