Does anyone compost their gerbil's bedding? I did a major clean of my gerbils' 75 gallon tank for the first since adopting them, and realized just how much garbage I was throwing away.
Are there any health concerns about their waste? How long does it take to break down into useable compost?
I use Kaytee Clean and Cozy, Care Fresh, aspen and hay as bedding.
Thanks!

Yes, I compost all my bedding. It is quite a lot of dry stuff to compost, so I have to make sure to put in green thing like vegetable waste and water it with the hose. I don't really know about health concerns but I ate the vegetables and didn't get sick or anything. With food scraps and other compost things mixed in it took maybe a year to all break down. But that also is because I just keep adding until the compost box is full and then dump it out. I use Kaytee Clean and Cozy. I used Care Fresh once but then didn't again. I haven't ever tried aspen or hay for bedding.

I use hemp bedding for my boys cage. I was originally hoping I could put it in the garden waste bin I have, but the council don't accept pet bedding of any kind, including ones made from plants! (apparently their processing plants can't distinguish between plant based bedding and other types).
Anyway, whilst I did chuck some on my (open) compost heap, that 1st lot has taken about a year to break down! From then on I gave something like 2/3 of it to my neighbour who chucks it in his compost bins, where with the various plants in there it breaks down much more quickly, he takes a load of the bedding each time I change it (every ~3mths, there's roughly 150 lts of it). The rest I chuck in the general waste bin, although I am going to use a little this autumn as mulch to go on some plants to protect them from the coming frosts.
