My gerbils are picky about treats and it’s taken me forever to find something they like. (They literally leave both sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds at the bottom of their bowl!) I finally found that they like rice Chex so now I can work more on hand taming them. Does anyone else have experience with feeding rice/ rice Chex? Since rice swells, what is a good max amount to feed them? (Right now I feed them both only about 3 a day, broken up into small pieces).

I personally wouldn’t recommend using rice Chex as gerbil treats. They are full of carbs and have added sugars so they provide no nutritional value for your gerbils. Three (for both) is quite a lot to be feeding your gerbils. Really you shouldn’t give your gerbils more than one small treat a day at the most and I usually don’t even give my gerbils this much. My gerbils don’t like freeze dried strawberries and those are the only treats I have found that they don’t like but strangely enough they like fresh strawberries and other freeze dried fruits. I like using fresh foods such as berries, banana, romaine lettuce (no iceberg and no spinach,) carrots, and broccoli. Basically whatever veggie I am having with dinner I save a piece and just look it up to make sure they can eat it. Another option is dried whole wheat spaghetti or raisins with no additives. Like I said earlier don’t give them more than one small piece at the most once a day since they have sugars that can be unhealthy if given in too large of quantities. More treats my gerbils like (these are given rarely and only on special occasions) are applesauce or baby food with no additives, make sure everything is safe and peanut butter (or in my case almond butter) that is unsalted and has no other additives. Nuts are another great option but make sure they are unroasted and unsalted.

Ok, I’ll probably try the spaghetti or baby food, it seems to be the one thing left I haven’t tried 🙂 I do share the 3 pieces between both of them so they’re definitely not getting three each. Yeah and they do like freeze dried strawberries too but I’ve heard those can be high in sugar also. I’ll probably try the plain spaghetti for hand taming. I’ve literally tried everything else 😅
