Hi! Melty here, a relatively new gerbil mom (had them for about 4 months now). My gerbils Momo and Nene have suddenly stopped eating as much as usual for a few days now. I give them a bit of new food every day still, and I see that they really dig and look for particular pieces, but leave a lot of food that they normally eat behind. They might be a little bit stressed right now, because I moved them to my parents house since I'm staying here for a couple of days, and it's since then that they eat much less than usual. I really don't know why they suddenly got picky like that and I'm worried they will stay like this. They eat only about 5% of the mix that I give them right now.
Did anyone else had this happen to their gerbils? How do I teach them to be less picky?

Mine are the same. Sorry; I don’t have an answer for you. I scattered fed mine but then one day decided to put a few days’ worth of food in a dish to see what they ate, and I was surprised to see they ignored most of it! I’m feeding vita-something and Power of 5 pellets. They don’t even seem to touch the pellets. I’ve seen them eat certain bits but am not sure what those are. I don’t know if I need to switch brands or what. I feel like I’m throwing away a lot of their food. Anyone here have suggestions?

what brand of food do you give them? My two boys, Kirby and Tristan are really good eaters, as was my Theo before he passed away- he would be waiting by his dish every morning waiting for me to fill it as it was almost empty(i prefer to give just enough and give fresh than fill a dish up, i give them Hagen original hamster & gerbil food but take out most of the corn and some sunnies(which i give to the squirrels), i know seed mix may not be best but that is what most of my gerbils' have enjoyed, one lived to 4 1/2 years with no health issues. I don't think you can make gerbils less picky but may need to buy different foods to try them with, depending what you can buy near you.

My gerbils are the same way! Picky eaters, don't seem to eat a lot at all. I feed them VitaSmart food. They don't seem to like it, but it's the only type that's sold in the local pet shop that contains an adequate amount of protein.
