I live in a studio flat, so I put my hamster, Bumble Bean, and my gerbil, Scooby, in the bathroom overnight so they can run on their wheels, and drink their water from their noisy, steel BB water bottles without waking me. In Scooby's case, he also somehow crashes around his cage topper, bangs things about, and chews his paper rolls so noisily, I have to close the door.
Does anyone sleep in the same room with gerbils? How does that work for you?

I sleep in the same room as my gerbils, mainly because it wouldn't really work anywhere else because of both the size of the cage and my cat.
Sure, they can be noisy, but they usually aren't so there's not really a way I 'deal with it' I'm afraid. I would say it's gotten easier as time's gone on as I've become more used to the noises and able to sleep through them. All gerbils are different so mine could well be quieter than Scooby at night, although I will say that Pippa used to always chew the mesh at night because she wanted attention - she never did this in the day. In those cases I sometimes wouldn't really get to sleep.
Is there anything you could swap out overnight to reduce noise? For an example, having a different (quieter) water bottle at night, but the usual one in the day? Or maybe you could take out the cardboard at night and put in more toys to keep him entertained? That could be a pain, but if something like that worked it may be more convenient for you than having the pets in the bathroom.

I also sleep in the same room as my gerbils, because it's easiest as the cage fits next to the covered-over fireplace, so the curtains can still be open. I generally don't have trouble when I'm asleep, but sometimes if they are cheating noisy cardboard and I can't get to sleep, I take it out and give them some hay instead.

I have had my two boys in my bedroom for awhile a moved one of my girls into there recently. I take the water bottle out at night for the girl but the boys don't really make a lot of noise with it so I just leave it in. I think she would normally make a lot more noise but she has been sleeping more than usual. She was injured in a declan and she's just in my bedroom so I can keep an eye on her easier. The boys have a topper which they make a lot of noise in, but it's fairly easy to take it off at night and just put it back on in the morning. I oil their wheel so it doesn't squeak and put cardboard under it so it doesn't clank on the glass. I take out all their cardboard at night. They have become pretty quiet at night. They used to keep me awake but I think after a while of having no toys at night they realize they might as well sleep now and play around in the daytime.

Thanks for the ideas, folks. I've been giving Scooby cardboard to see him through the night. Maybe if I took out his wheel overnight and gave him paper instead of cardboard it'd work better. Also maybe play with him a bit earlier in the evening. Adventures with gerbils... 🙂

You could also try earplugs

You could also try earplugs Hah! You haven't heard the decibels my boy can put out! Earplugs wouldn't work. He's mostly noisy right after I go to bed - less so if I give him paper instead of cardboard - so we may be able to figure something out.
