Hello. I have two yellow agouti (I think) gerbils. I feed them Oxbow gerbil food and I have been wondering: what is the average weight for a gerbil? My gerbils are currently 64 and 68 grams. one of them is a hoarder, and he looks a little pudgy already. I was only given a vague age for them at petco ("most of them are sold 2-3 months old") so I have to assume that they are three months at their oldest (I have only had them for ten days). is this an ok weight for them? My last gerbils were overweight, and I do not want to make the same mistake. I feed these ones about a teaspoon and a half twice a day, supplemented with apples or veggies twice a week (is this underfeeding???). I trust the oxbow brand, but the one third cup they recommend is exorbitant. that's more than my dog gets for dinner.

64g and 68g is about right for 3-month-old gerbils. They will continue to gain weight up to about 6 months or possibly beyond.
Oxbow is a good brand for rabbits and guinea pigs but it's not highly recommended for gerbils because it's hay based and gerbils need a more seed-based diet really (ideally with some hay on the side but not as the basis of the diet).

Thanks! I appreciate it. I'll look at another thread to see what seed mixes are out there.
