I am currently introducing a new friend to my gerbil and I have come across a problem, I only have one water bottle. I have but a bowl of water for one but I'm not sure if I should use it, the taming will take around 3 to 5 days and I wanted to ask if it is OK to leave the bowl or do I go and get a water bottle?
Thanks -alek

It's fine to use a water bowl, but you will need to check it regularly as they can get filled with bedding or knocked over. It's always a good idea to have a few spare water bottles anyway as they can start leaking, get blocked or (if plastic) get chewed at any time.

Ideally you'd put a water bowl up on a ledge or a high enough platform (if you have them), so that they can't kick bedding into it.

It sounds like these gerbils are in a split tank Markpd, in which case they shouldn't have ledges or platforms. Although normally what you say would be true. In a split tank they should also have quite shallow bedding which will slightly reduce the chance of a water bowl getting filled with bedding.

Ah yea, I missed that! And true . I suppose then they could put the bowl on a small box, or a small block of wood to cut the chances down further of contamination?

If they are being switched 3+ times a day, would it not be okay to just make them drink on the one side and give the other a carrot?

gerbils need 24 hr. access to water so a bowl would be better to give
