Hello! I am currently researching gerbils, just kinda thinking about perhaps getting a pair of females in the future if my grandparents will allow it, and after I have done all the research/purchased everything needed, but I wanted to make sure that I had an appropriate sized home for them obviously before moving on with anything.
I currently have a 36 gallon bowfront aquarium (I heard aquariums make wonderful tanks for gerbils, hamsters, etc, and I will make a DIY screen lid or something) and I wanted to know if that would be large enough for 2 female gerbils to be happy? I know that in the future I could look into buying something to put on top of it, to give a second floor perhaps, but for now that’s what I’ve got. I’ve heard of people keeping 2-3 of them in 10 gallon tanks which to me I was like “Well…that’s kinda crazy!” But that’s just me 😂
Anyway, thx for any info!

I think the FAQ page says to have at least 10 gallons for each gerbil, so 36 gallon would be good for two gerbils. I don't think anyone on here still thinks 10 gallons is okay for two gerbils, so you're not alone in thinking it's crazy

Even the old FAQ, made in 2007, said 10 gallons was too small for a pair of gerbils. 2-3 gerbils in a 10 gall tank is crazy .
childofgod12 Even though technically your tank is under our new advised minimum, it's only a little under, so I think will be quite adequate. Although it depends a little on it's dimensions (depth is important), what are it's dimensions?
Oh and welcome to the forum btw

Just saw this reply 😂 it’s been a long while since I’ve checked back here!! As for dimensions, here they are (I got this from the Petsmart website): 30.7 in L x 15.7 in W x 22.2 in H (77.9 x 39.8 x 56.3 cm)
It’s got quite a bit of depth IMO from the looks, enough to add plenty of bedding (I know they are burrowing animals)
