Every so often my gerbil, Dale, will be up at the surface of his cage standing up and stare off into space. It's almost like he just woke up and is trying to take it all in? It happened again today and even when I was making noise, talking to him, and flicking the light on and off...he had no reaction. He was just still and quiet. It wasn't until I opened the lid of cage that he snapped out of it. Has this happened to anyone else?

One of our gerbils is in this trance-like stage regularly, just sitting at a certain place (always the same), staring into eternity, not reacting to anything. She seems relaxed in those moments.
Not sure why they are doing it, but it seems to be a thing gerbils do.
