Annual update: Scooby and I are still doing fine. He seems happy in his bin and topper. Part of his space is all built up around his nest, and he likes crawling under his bridge and through his tubes, but he doesn’t play much in the other area. If the substrate’s shallow, he plows around and seems to have a good time, but as it gets deeper, he just stays on top! Funny guy.
For a while during his adolescence, he began nipping at my hand when I reached into his topper to clean & renew. He's stopped doing that either because he grew out of it, or because I started giving him a treat every morning before messing with his stuff. (Probably the latter. LOL!)
We have floor time almost every night, and he still popcorns happily about. He’ll lie quietly with his eyes closed for up to 10 minutes of petting and ‘scritching’. He turns his head so I can scritch his throat. Sometimes he squeeks. He evidently enjoys grooming me, too. He’s pretty much destroyed one of my flannel shirts, and has busily chewed holes in one of my t-shirts. Now I have dedicated ‘gerbil-wear’.
He also seems to enjoy my recorder-playing - especially the high notes!
The other day, he winked at me for the first time (after a year!) so I winked back. What a great little pet!

It sounds like you and Scooby are good friends! You're very lucky to have a gerbil who sits still to be stroked.
Daisy will wink at me but she won't put up more than a couple of seconds of stroking.

Re stroking, yea my boys are the same, Avon won't stay still at all, but Blake will now sit for a whole 4-5s before he gets twitchy! But 10 minutes stroking! Wow! You are lucky Stella Blake sometimes winks, although I'm not sure if it's at me, or just random winking. Lol @ gerbil wear
