Hello! Recently I thought of an idea for an extra area where I could take my gerbils out and they could play, just a bigger area out of their cage with more hides and things. My idea was a small playpen, I want to put are an extra wheel, 2 or 3 hides, a bendy bridge, and more things like that. but I have a lot of questions about what should be in it and the size. I have 2 gerbils, so what would a reasonable size be? Should I put bedding in it? How long should they be in there at a time? Are there any other things you recommend I do for this? Thanks!

What sort of playpen did you have in mind? Amazon does sell animal playpens, but they're pretty small, and the sides are low enough that I'd worry about gerbils jumping out.

I'm far from a gerbil expert (I've had my cuties for less than 10 months), but from looking at your pictures, the walls of the pen seem to be made of cloth or netting. Is it possible that gerbils would chew their way out? Also, the sides are 15 inches tall; might gerbils be able to jump over the side?

Thanks for bringing the sides up, looking at that now it could be a big risk. It says that they use "durable Polyester fabric and a high-strength memory steel holder surrounded by nets," but I'm pretty sure they can chew through it so I might look for a different one. As for them being able to jump out, I will probably look for a pen with a roof or top so they can't jump out.

Sounds like a cool idea, keep us updated as to which pen you choose and how it works out.

Pine & Peach How are you at DIY?
As for how long they should be in there, going by my own gerbils and what other people report, it really varies depending on their character I'm afraid! I let my boys choose how long they can stay by having tubes I attach to their cages during playtime, Avon will tend to visit each of the plays pens only a couple of minutes, if he goes out at all (although he normally does at least every other day). Blake on the other hand will quite often stay out for 1/2hr or more, quite often I have to put him back as I've got things to do, or I'm going out. Blake has always been a bigger explorer .
