I zip tied a plastic cube organizer together to make one of those DIY free roaming cages, but I'm worried my gerbils will jump over the walls and escape. When I do use it, they spend most of the time trying to chew plastic wall. Should I try providing them more toys/hides and a larger area to run around?

Hello,
Sorry, I didn't see this thread until now.
I have some of those plastic cubes. If they're the 50cm height, the gerbils probably won't jump out, unless there's something near the edge they can use as a starting point. If you buy more cubes, you can double up on the height though. What kind of things do you put in the free roaming area? Perhaps they need more to keep them distracted from chewing the sides. I like to put in a wheel, sand bath, various tubes and tunnels and climbing toys, especially things that are too big to go in their cages.

Thanks for the suggestions! I found a hallway in my house that's perfect for free roaming. It has 3 walls and I use the barrier to block off the entrance. I usually give them a few hides and some toys, but I just got them a wheel and it seems to keep their attention.
