So every night I feed my gerbils and play with them and the night before my gerbil died, he was completely fine. Last night, when I went to feed my gerbils, he was sitting in the corner of the cage with his eyes closed. He was breathing really heavily and would hardly move. I tried to give him food and water, but nothing worked. I read on Google that it could be an allergy or something, so I changed the bedding. Later that night when I went to check on him, he was kicking and retracting his legs, little did I know those were his last movements. Sadly, he passed. I’m just curious as to what happened and how I can prevent it. Any ideas?

Edit: I forgot to add that he was about a year and a half old. He was born in October 16, 2020. His name was Chonks.

sorry to hear about your little Chonks - but unfortunately there really isn't any way to be sure on that - although I would say that an RI was less likely given that it is quite easy to hear them when they have an infection - it is quite a distintive and reasonable constant sound.
Siezures are very common of course and heart issues can sometimes be instant - additionally most tumours seen in gerbils are literally 'seen' externally with lumps and bumps - although of course a tumour in an organ or other important parts of the body might not need to be that big to cause damage.
It is always a shame to not really know what causes the loss of our little friends - and I know from experience that they play on your mind for some time. Sad times.
