i was introducing to male gerbils today, i have done it before so know what to do but when i put them in the split cage together they were a bit jumpier that usial but i thought nothing of it but when i got home in the evening they had faught and hurt each other one of them has bitten through the others tail! and it looks really painful what should i do! there is a bit still attached! the other gerbil have a few cuts and some fur missing but seems fine otherwise. the one with the hurt tail is acting normally and doestnt seem to notice his tail is half off! what do you suggest i do??? should i get a vet to amputate?? also the hurt tail is near the base so the whole tail wouldnt have to be amputated

If it's just hanging off by skin it will probably fall off. I would take him to a vet. They may want to amputate it and stitch it up properly, but at the very least they can give him pain relief and possibly antibiotics to prevent infection.

I wouldn't. It might introduce infection. If there's any physical dirt on the tail, wipe it off, but otherwise I'd leave it alone. You could also replace his bedding with paper towels to keep his tail clean.

I have done it before so know what to do, but when i put them in the split cage together they were a bit jumpier that usual, but i thought nothing of it, but when i got home in the evening they had fought and hurt each other
Something's awry there, how long were they together and being supervised before you went out? Only asking so that this type of accident hopefully doesn't happen again (to you or anyone else).
