my gerbil jumped into my coffee cup! Luckily it wasn't hot but I don't really know what to do! He's like visibly very uncomfortable and trying to get the coffee or maybe just the 'wet' off of him (and my other aren't helping groom him right now (which is weird)). I don't know what to do, he's so miserable. I tried like washing some of the coffee out of his fur with a little bit of water and like some misting from a really gentle spray bottle and let him rub around on a towel but I definitely didn't get it all (I also wanted to be pretty conservative with the water I know they don't do the whole water bath, but coffee is so sticky and ! IDK!). Also there's my worry about him ingesting any coffee while getting it off of himself, I dont know if that enough to actually be harmful or not. My biggest concern is his scent glands if there any residual coffee in there and if there is anything I need/can do about that. That's what seems to be bothering him the most and i hate to see him so uncomfortable, and idk what kind of health concerns that could cause.

Hello,
It's been a few hours. How is he now?
This is one situation in which it's acceptable to bathe a gerbil, in lukewarm water with no soap. Afterwards, blot away what water you can with a towel, then give the gerbil a sand bath to further dry themselves, and make sure they are kept warm until fully dry.

hello! Thank you for your reply! I didn't see this before I fell asleep but he seems to be doing okay and doesn't seem as agitated anymore, he might be itching a little bit more than normal but it's hard to tell, that being said should I still go ahead and give him that bath just to be safe? (They also don't understand the sand bath concept. I have tried to get them to use it so many times and I have the sand but they just ignore it.)

The coffee might be irritating his skin and making him itchy. Depending on how badly he is itching you could still give him a bath. It won't do any harm but will hate it so you'll have to weigh up the discomfort from the itching vs discomfort from itching.
