Do you guys throw away your equipment when you don't use it for the original gerbils any more? Is it possible to use wooden objects that were already used for gerbils for other gerbils? How do you clean them so the first gerbils' scent won't be noticeable to the new gerbils? Seems impossible to me since wood can't be washed with water ... or can it?

I reuse wooden things as long as they aren't too stained or smelly, and can be washed. Solid wooden things can be washed in hot soapy water (some vinegar can also help with smells), and left to dry for a couple of days. Some wooden houses are bonded with glue and may fall apart when washed.
I often buy things with reusability in mind these days. Harder woods, such as grapevines or birch logs are easier to clean than softer woods.

I also reuse certain wooden things if they can be cleaned enough for who they are going to - so if I think 'could this cause an issue' I won't use it. Perhaps a few extra washes and strong dries (like in the baking sun or on a radiator) and I might feel better about it.
I never risk it in tense situations at all (new splits/breeding/with pups) and most likely not with a trio either.
