Hi, I think my gerbil is pregnant and she currently has a 20 gallon tank. My other gerbils can’t live with her since it turns out that they aren’t a same-sex pair. I would like to give her a bigger tank so that I can keep two of her pups with her, but I can’t afford a larger tank right now. I know it’s a big ask, but I’m wondering if anyone has a 40 gallon or bigger tank that I could have? I live in Illinois and I can pay for shipping and maybe for the tank if I can afford it. Also, do you have any ideas for how I could get my hands on a large tank for not too much money? Thanks!

Hi, I can't sell you a tank but a budget option is making a bin cage out of those plastic storage boxes - they come quite big (145l) and are made of strong plastic so they work pretty much the same as a glass tank (only a lot cheaper!) You can make a lid out of mesh so a little bit of DIY is required but not much. Otherwise if you have an Ikea near you you can do a detolf conversion which a lot of people have done. detolf conversion This uses a storage cabinet which is converted into the cage. You'd need to make a lid although I've found some people even sell ready made lids online if you're really not into DIY (like me!) Also you can check websites like eBay and gumtree - sometimes you can get lucky and find a cheap second hand tank. Hope that helps :)

Just one thing I'd add about the bin cage idea, if you do go that route make sure you get a bin which doesn't have any internal ledges or corners that a gerbil can get a bite on, otherwise they'll be chewing their way out! Any yea, keep an eye out for 2nd hand tanks, especially any cracked ones, they should go cheap!
