That's a lovely cage. I've seen it on European websites but I don't believe it's available in the UK. I have the Living World Eco Habitat, which is like the bottom part of it without the barred section, and which is available on Amazon.co.uk, though very expensive now. I protected the corner posts by gluing aluminium corner profiles over them. Your gerbil is stunning, by the way. It's great to have you here. I am daisy from Hamster Clubhouse who referred you here. Oh hello! yes thank you for the referral. Yes he is certainly a very handsome boy. I know it's early days but I think he's showing some signs of stress? On the top left of the cage you'll see a circle. That's the entrance to his sand box. He spends a lot of time on top of that box or digging the perspex when inside the box. Hoping he stops this behaviour when I get the bedding at 35cm but have you any advice? He's extremely active. Very different to hamsters. I don't think he's even slept yet.. he just seems to rest on top of the sand box. He's very skittish too. He don't bother him. Often offer treats and he does take them from us. He did get startled though and bit my partner. I reckon he's a bit stressed Scrabbling in corners or dead ends is fairly normal behaviour for gerbils. Anything that looks like the beginning of a tunnel makes them want to extend the tunnel. It can be a neurotic behaviour sometimes, and can increase in times of stress or boredom. It can be a stereotypy (a repetitive non-functional behaviour), sometimes caused by poor living conditions in puphood, and it doesn't necessarily resolve even once living conditions are improved.

He now has more than the required bedding depth. Spends most of his time digging and running. Still spend time resting on top of that sand box and excessively digs at it. I think that previous person has decided against rehoming her gerbil so I'm regularly searching different pages. I reckon a friend would be good for him as I don't know what else I can do to improve his living. He has space, large wheel, bunch of random different types of chews, cardboard, tunnels, treats etc. All is left is to try bonding

How about moving the sandbox out of the corner a bit? (enough for him to walk on the left side of it). Simply doing that might stop him digging obsessively in it, although he may just dig in the corner instead! lol
