I will post the story on the main thread with some photo's as it was a bit of a different split experience in the end. However Hattie and Mymble seem to have bonded well and have been together since Saturday. All seems to be going well, however Mymble is seemingly frustrated already. I am putting lots of toilet roll and hay and tubes in, although I'm running out of cardboard tubes.
Can I put the wheel back in, or should I look at something else? Is there a particular thing that is less likely to create disruption between them to start with? Also how long do I leave it before introducing the next item? At what point can I change their bedding? They have been in the split a looooooooong time and I haven't touched anything in that time as I didn't want to mess with the scent. When can I build the bedding level up again?
Sorry for asking lots of questions. I tried looking for an old thread from someone else that I think had some advice from LilyandDaisy about this but couldn't find it. I don't want to do anything that will jeopardise it when it's been such a long time coming, but I am also aware that Mymble being frustrated is never good and I don't want that to cause problems either.

I think you could give them a wheel for a couple of hours here and there when you're nearby to keep a general eye on them. If that goes well, you could consider leaving it in permanently from, maybe, next week?
There aren't any real rules to it, largely you have to just react to how the gerbils seem to be getting along.
You can probably start adding more bedding from Saturday. You could remove a couple of handfuls of old bedding and add 3-4 handfuls of new. Then repeat that every couple of days as lomg as they seem okay.
Things you could start adding at this point which are relatively safe are tunnels and open-ended hides such as bendy bridges, avoiding anything where one gerbil could trap another such as a hide with one entrance.
It's so good to hear they're together now. It's been a long journey but all worth it in the end.

Thanks. It's good to have some place to start. I have just put the wheel in now and they both started running on it together. Mymble has since gone back to chewing. I'll take it out when I feed them in a bit. I'm not sure if I can return the tank to the same setup I had before as I had a large bendy bridge as a divider so I could have a lower area for them. I don't know if that might cause them to become territorial so I need to rethink.
At what point can you consider doing a usual clean out?
I am so relieved that they seem to have accepted one another. I honestly wasn't sure after the posturing from Mymble the other week.

I don't think anything can happen in the split that would mean the gerbils definitely won't ever bond. They can be trying to kill each through the divider and may still end together!
I think I would try to wait a month for a big clean (longer if you can), with spot cleaning and removing small amounts of bedding until then.
It's probqbly best to have a simple setup for the first few weeks, and then you could start experimenting with divided areas and so on.
