If a gerbil already had a partner, then was introduced to a new gerbil and stayed with that one for a while (maybe a month), would the split cage method have to be done again if it is put back with its previous partner? Will they still recognize each other if I put them together right away or will it be like they never met?

Yes, you would still have to split cage. It's possible the split might be slightly easier since they might have some memory of each other, but you still must split cage.

How did this go Bananaboat? Did you try it at all?
This type of intro can go either way really - so would be great to hear what the situation was with your pair.
Sometimes they bond again really easily - especially if the one taken out was the dominant one (and was a male) or they were both really old for the re-intro as these pairs usually aren't too bothered about faffing and status posing.
Other times (especially if it was a female used for breeding or was the non-dominant one from a pair or males used for breeding) these almost always result in fighting or a short term declan.
