The problem with those is they only work for that particular type of cage. The problem really arises when you are using a tank for housing. You then have to keep the water bottle *inside* the tank, so they have ample opportunity to chew. I also find that those bottles with the spout at the tip are very drippy and that you have to keep a dish underneath to prevent the bedding for getting wet.

They are for CritterTrail, but you can always think something up to secure it. Like bend a metal piece around and secure it with something you get at a hardware store. You always have to think of new ideas when having gerbils.

Yeah! My bf, Cam, has actually helped me build all of the accessories so at least I don't get made fun of at home . Most people think a triple deck 27 gallon is too much. *pssht* what do they know .

The Flat-Bac bottles from Super Pet has a pretty hard-to-chew plastic lid with a metal spout. They are intended for cages, but you can but special tank connectors for a few dollars more. They are the best water bottles I've ever had for my gerbils.

I just use a 75 ml bottle in a tomato sauce can with a drilled hole in it. The only minus is that I have to change (check) the water quite often. For a lid I use a pringles-box lid.I fasten it with masking tape. They haven't chewed on this, maybe it's not "interesting" enough. It works for me. I just wish you could get taller cans at the supermarket! If you want totally chewproof plastic then you would need to use the kind of plastic they use in people's dental fillings... it's just gerbil-like... (Oh dear one gerbil just started to thump because he heard the typing... ;D)... to chew on anything that gets in their way.

Is chewing the water bottle usually a real problem with gerbils? I use the 4 oz. plastic Oasis bottles in the standard metal holder and have never had a gerbil chew one.

Maybe you are just lucky ;D. My gerbils will chew through their water bottle if given half a chance. Maybe you've had such good luck because you've always used a bottle guard?

Chewing the water bottle USED To be a problem for me. Not anymore. Oasis is the best. They're made with a different kind of plastic. And they're an all round shape so they can't sink their teeth into the top of it. ;D Other bottles are a cheaper plastic that they can easily get their teeth into.. or they have rubber stoppers and they chew the rubber off.
