Hey, I just had an idea today. If you need a home made bottle guard, and you want to use a hermetic can, and you don't have a black and decker drill or can't use one...how about using one of those herbal tea cans? I just emptied my herbal tea can yesterday, and I noticed that it is not as hard as a hermetic can. I don't know if you have those in the US but we have them in Europe. Just remember to wash out the srong smell of herbs first. And filedown any sharp edges. ;D I don't know ,maybe I'm off the track..? people must be tired of these posts.

Congrats on Full Member status!!! Great job!! I am glad that you are thinking of other alternatives. I am not sure they have those cans but I can check. Thanks

Hagen makes bottle guards but they are most likely not available outside the USA or the UK. You could always make your own thing anyway. Actually bottle holders or guards have been produced by Oasis since the 1990s in the USA.

I don't like that one, I wouldn't recommend it. The only thing it looks good for is making a holder, since it's a pain to hang water bottles to tanks. The wire just hangs in the back of it and blocks the bottom of the screw and has the straw coming out. They could still reach up and chew the plastic screw part. Plus they could climb on top of it and chew the top of the water bottle right off. I had that problem.. I think a couple others here did too.

lol speaking of water bottles..
My 7 boys were pissing me off with their water bottle. I had a box under it and it kind of blocked from the rest of the tank so they couldn't bury it. Well they started chewing everything, and they dug a hole through the block and kept purposely kicking bedding in there. So the water bottle leaked and I had to throw out a lot of stuff.
They did it again the next day. And I didn't even add anymore shavings in (they still had a lot), so they purposedly kicked the bottom shavings to the top and got it to the bottle again.
So I got pissed, took 2 very, very thick pieces of cardboard and blocked it off, 1 on the bottom as a floor, and one as a wall/side to side..complete enclosure. To get to the water bottle, sandbox, wheel and food dish now, they have to jump over the little space I left them at the very top. So it's like a 4 by 6 inch room. lol.
lol they've been going crazy digging and chewing at it. They're not getting very far. And the water bottle isn't burried. I win. ;D ;D

Ithnk using wire mesh as a holder is a great idea. Just add a second piece of wire mesh to go around the entire bottle and fold it over the top. Something similar works for Andrea and her inquisitive gerbils.

I personally think it works good, but I have to tell that my gerbils have never chewed at the bottle. So I can imagine that it don't works if your gerbils climb on their drinking bottle to chew it. Maybe than is the tip of Queenofthenile a great idea, so that you cover the entire bottle. What I can tell is that this is a good, easy and cheap holder if your gerbils don't chew on their bottle. ;D

This is how we have our jirds water bottle in their tank. Have wrapped a sheet of fine mesh around it, and held on with two pieces of garden wire tied around it. Then an extra piece of wire is tied to the wire rings that bends out to the edges of the tank, the lid stops it from moving. if it can withstand jirds, should have no probs against gerbils ;D
