Hi everyone, we recently noticed our gerbil Pickle had a nail that started to curve so we were keeping an eye on it and we’re prepared to trim it. However, I managed to get her to sit still long enough for me to see that there seems to be something causing the nail to curve? It’s not causing her any pain and doesn’t seem irritated (yet). Has anyone seen this before? I’ve never added a picture before so hopefully this works. A

That photo isn’t very clear so hopefully this full link works better.

Looks like there might be something wrong with the nail bed itself - there are some 'other' bits coming out of the toe/nail socket that might be part of the cause.
Have you had a closer poke around to see if those loose bits are attached to the nail bed as well or whether they are an old nail casing that has got stuck?

Just poked around a bit and tried to gently tug at it. It seems like it’s attached to her toe and when I pulled at it she pulled away, lost all interest in her treat and wanted to go back into her cage. Her toe actually moved when I pulled at it so whatever it is is most likely pretty deep/stuck.

Might be worth a trip to an exotic vet if possible. Sometimes problems with the nails can be a sign of something else internal - but this looks like it could just need a mild sedation (or an experienced grip) to get a closer look at and maybe a trim.
Very strange looking for sure.
