Tristan is getting near 4 years old and has been breathing a bit heavier than normal over the past few days, other than being abit more tired, he is acting like himself- eating a lot (always been a good eater!), drinker(think maybe his kidneys also have an issue as he has been drinking more, even wheeling at times but not as often. He also scratched his ear and made it bleed last night but seems to be better today- he has longer nails so think it's just a sore but watching it. I know he is a bigger gerbil (120 grams) so not just age, but also his weight could be causing his heart to have to work harder. I'd take him to the vets but we are getting snow/cold so will have to wait a few days until the weather improves to get him into a vet to check him, but i know they will say he's old and not much can be done. He is doing well otherwise, still alert, no mucous so will just watch if he gets any worse. He also gets very warm when napping and sometimes he twitches in his sleep(i was worried about seizures but seems to be when he is dreaming so i think he is just having some type of vivid dream). Any input is welcome. I am keeping him comfortable and spending as much time as i can as i know each day is a bonus, he's special and my sweet cuddler so it's hard to see him not 100%

Sadly Tristan passed away today on the way to get him PTS, he grew worse by this AM and knew he didn't have much time. I will add a message tomorrow as i'm not doing well and feeling very tired from caring for him in the past week.

I'm so sorry that Tristan has passed away. He lived to such a good age and I'm sure had a very happy life too. Rest in pedace Tristan.

And yea, he lived to a very good age, and it sounds like he lived a good life with you.

Oh no, bless you. Round the clock care can be exhausting sometimes - especially with a little guy so much loved.

Thanks, Mark and Betty, he was amazing but glad i cared for him until he grew much worse. It's strange he isn't here but trying to adjust to that.

Yea I know what you mean, although my boys didn't live to the ripe old age your boy did, I still miss their presence, random scurrying on briefly waking, or full on 'gerbling' when fully awake, not to mention I still turn to their cage when I'm about to leave or go to bed, with the intent of saying goodbye or goodnight!
