Hi, my gerbil has his scent gland + tumor removed today, but the vet prescribed him 2 ml of 1.5% meloxidyl twice pr. day, which sounds like way too much, I've had him on 0.5% metacam before for eye problems/sores, which afaik is the same product, where I had to give him 1 ml pr. day, the vet that did the surgery is inexperienced when it comes to rodents, so I have major doubts about giving him that much meloxidyl, so far I've given him 1 ml 0.5% metacam, and he seems to be ok'ish, for a gerbil that had surgery earlier today.

usually metacam is a very small drop for gerbils so i would look into this as it also is the concentration of Metacam and not just the amt. Hopefully someone on here can help you with the dosage, better to give less than more esp. with a strong med. that isn't made for gerbils.

1ml is a huge amount of liquid for a gerbil. I'd suggest emailing or ringing your vet to clarify the dosage and also let them know what you've already given.
My vets prescribe the 0.5mg/ml metacam, and I think the dose is usually about 0.03-0.05ml for a gerbil depending on weight. I'm not sure whether 0.5mg/ml is the same as 0.5%?

It still seems like a lot of liquid though, even if the drug part is right. 1ml is too much for a gerbil to drink all at once. It would be equivalent to a couple of litres for a human. If the vet wants your gerbil to take that metacam, they need to prescribe a more concentrated version such as 1.5mg/ml metacam for dogs and rabbits.

The metacam I had prescribed for Avon (and later used for Blake) is the one for dogs, and the doseage was 0.03ml, which matches what L&D said, if that helps.
