I used to buy 5kg of Chinchilla sand from zoo plus for £5.50 +delivery, now it's £9.19! But out of stock anyway. I might get some from here at £7.14 for 5 kg, although the ad is rather light on info.
What do you guys get? And where and how much?

Recently I bought a 20kg bag from Porton Aquatics. I haven't used it yet as I have a bit left from my last bag but it seems okay. I ordered it along with 15kg of bedding so the courier probably hates me!

It's a fine sand. Sepiolite by its nature is always on a continuum between sand (bigger particles) and dust (very fine particles) rather than being distinctly one or the other. Sepiolite and quartz have different properties and many people prefer one over the other for various reasons. Personally I prefer sepiolite because I find it more absorbent, which means it gets less smelly and I suspect it cleans gerbils' coats better due to absorbing the greases.

Yes, I prefer the sepiolite - and manage to nab a 25kg bag for £10 at a farm shop who were more than likely just wanting rid of it after a special order went awry. However, I had to carry it myself some way - so I sympathise with your courier.
Unlike a loosely packed sack of food - they are rather compact bags and act more like a lump of concrete!!!
It is possible to find sepiolite in old-fashioned weighing out pet stores in smaller bags that work out cheaper than the PAH sand now - which means if you wanted a larger bag or the whole sack - they may well do you a deal.

Not had a chance to read into quartz vs sepiolite so far, and I've run out of bathing sand, so for this occasion I've ordered the 5kg bag of quartz from ratrations, I'll LYK what it's like!
Will also be interesting to see what L&D makes of the sepiolite from Porton Aquatics too.

A little update about the ratrations sand (which actually came from an aquatics shop, I've forgotten the name), it's noticeably coarser than the zooplus chinchilla sand (not sure if that matters) and it seems to be slightly fragranced too, which I'm not keen on. Worse is that the sand contains quite a lot of dust, I have to pour it from dish to dish a few times to get rid of it! So I'm not impressed with this sand and won't be buying it again. I'll add a brief review shortly. Unfortunately I'm not sure if my boys enjoy it as I've never seen them roll in any sand! Even when both dishes had the zooplus stuff (1 still does for now as they have stopped using that one as a toilet). They are very private as I almost never see them running on the wheel for example, if I turn round to look at them on it, they jump off! But I do hear them using it quite often. Anyway, my point is, they might be rolling in either sandbath, but I just never seen them doing it! LilyandDaisy Have you use the sepiolite from Porton Aquatics yet?

I haven't used it yet but it seems identical to the sepiolite I already had. The last bag was another 20kg bag from Ebay, so it might even be the same brand or certainly a very similar product.
