I have an extra 10 gallon tank I would like to use as a big "dig pot" but i don't know what to use that will allow the tunnels to hold up and not collapse. I have a regular sand bath but I figured it'd be an added bonus to get to play in the dirt and dig/tunnel outside of the regular cage. I seen a few say organic potting soil and peat moss some have said sand but without being wet/damp I can't see it holding its form if that makes since. Any suggestions greatly appreciated thanks in advance!

Yea sand won't hold up unless it's damp, and I think it would be very hard to keep the right moisture level, that said, I've never tried it! I would have thought the same would be true with soil? Not to mention it would be quite heavy to move around! (if you needed too).
How about using 'regular' bedding mixed with quite a lot of hay? No need to balance any moisture then!

I thought about just using the bedding but also wanted to give something different if that makes since lol i have already seen and read they can get bored easily 🤣 I've seen a few great videos where people have made tunnels using pvc or cardboard and placed them in the boxes but kinda wanted to see them make it the way they want lol thanks for the suggestion

Ah yea, fair enough. Perhaps soil might be easier then? I'm not sure tbh, perhaps look around on youtube to see if anyone has already done that? If so, let us know what you find out I've debated before here a few years ago whether to fill a wooden box with soil outside (and let things grow naturally) as a playpen for my gerbils (as I did for my Hamster when I was a kid, he loved it, especially when he found a worm! lol). But the problem of getting them back in a transport cage to bring them back indoors stopped me, with a Hamster it was easy, they are fairly slow and can't jump like gerbils can! With Gerbils it would be quite a risk they could escape putting them back in a transport cage! (unless it has very tall sides I suppose....). Actually I might revive that thread to see if anyone has any good ideas around that problem, thanks for reminding me .

😂 i will see what i can find, and good luck reviving the other thread maybe someone will have some ideas lol. I have a tank topper for the 10gal from our hamster i figured i could put it over the bigger cage get em in the topper than I could just set up back on the 10gal for playtime 🤷♀️ i had them in the 10gal for a couple days and it was pretty easy to convince them into the topper when i switched the cage lol

Turns out I hadn't started such a thread, I must've posted it in another thread, god knows which! So I started a new thread about it (in the housing section, if you're interested).
