Being that my gerbil, Regent, was left feeling lonely after his tank mate died, yesterday I made a trip to the local pet shop looking for a new gerbil. I was wondering about what color my new gerbil would be...the pet shop doesn't generally have a big selection. I didn't want one that looks exactly like Regent, as I like to be able to distinguish between them easily. I also didn't want one that looked exactly like RainDrop (the gerbil being replaced), because I wanted to see my new gerbil as an individual. Well, I was in luck, the pet shop had a gorgeous gerbil that was a striking combination of black and white fur. Has anyone ever come across a combination like this before? So now my new gerbil is home and in a split cage with Regent. I'm excited about this. It seems like not that long ago (actually, it was about ten months ago) that Regent was my baby gerbil being split-caged with RainDrop! Now Regent looks like a proper grown-up gerbil, and we'll see how he gets on with a baby. One more thing...does anyone have any suggestions as to a name for New Gerbil? I was thinking of either "Lightning" or "Starlight", but I would be happy to hear suggestions. Now for a photo...

Wow! He is pretty! Yes, this is a piebald. I actually have one right now. As far as I know, they're fairly common which is why it's possible to find them in a pet store. I've always been partial to the color, due to how striking it is. He seems like a cute little boy! You might not want my suggestions, lol. I always enjoy strange names and have gerbils named Tunnely Joe and Frank Jr. Jr. Jr. Jr. (among others). If he was my gerb, I might name him something like... Smeagel... or Frankenweenie, maybe Runtess depending on his size or something like that. My family has a knack for naming animals crazy odd things, including a cat named Enoki and a hairless guinea pig named Soup. I would be careful when introducing Regent and this fellow, since he's a bit older than a pup. Usually (unless they can tell you an age, in my experience they most often can't) in petstores they're around 4-6 months. This is old enough for both gerbils to be fully mature and will most certainly fight without a split on introduction. Anyways, he seems like a sweet little boy! I hope someone else comes up with better suggestions than mine, lol. If you can, I would love to know his name once you've decided!

Interesting point. I assumed my new gerbil is a baby since he's smaller than Regent; also, at the pet shop he was in a small enclosure with three other gerbils, if they had been adults, wouldn't they have been quarreling rather than huddling together? But you're right that I really don't know for sure. I did ask about his age at the shop but was told that most people just start counting age from the time they're brought home from the store. I've only had them in the split-cage for a few days and so far, they're ignoring each other. I guess I'll see how it goes...

Congratulations on the new gerbil! He is lovely.
I think he's probably more of a teenager or young adult than a baby. Adults don't necessarily quarrel even in small enclosures with lots of other gerbils. A young adult won't be quite as easy an introduction as a baby but usually shouldn't be too difficult.

Congrats on your gorgeous boy! I've had a few gerbils in this fabulous colour and they were all great gerbils! There is a black/white male at my local pet store, it was a rescue and they think he's 2 years old (guess) and i was thinking of adopting him but i have a female and he'd have to be alone- I've gotten to know the woman that works at the pet store and I said i was interested in him but i have a female so he may need to be alone- she said she'd give him free to someone but never offered him to me, which i thought was strange, but I think she wants' him to go with at least one other. I will see if he is still there when i go on Sunday. I know it's best if you can pair gerbils but isn't it best to get a great home with someone who has good knowledge than with someone who may have no experience or is young?! Good luck with your split cage and hope they become good friends! As for names, i like male human names. Maybe another R starting name you like? I look up baby boy names to help me find one.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I liked the idea of a name beginning with "r". Because of my new gerbil's black and white coloring, I've named him "Racoon". 🦝
