Hi, bit of a long story! Monday night my 3 year old gerbil appeared lethargic and had his eyes closed all day, Tuesday he appeared a lot better and was normal. Yesterday he started behaving very strangely… twisting and rolling over in his cage all day, all with his eyes closed! Today the seizures have mostly stopped, but he is trying to feed but is walking like he’s drunk and moving very strangely like his balance is completely gone. His eyes are still shut and he is making no sound at all. I spoke to my vet who said there wasn’t much they could do and to monitor him if he’s still eating. Has anyone else had symptoms like these in their pet?

Yes, this sounds like a stroke to me. I lost my 2 and a half boy Onion to one earlier this year. Some recover, pick themselves up, and are fine, while others just can't make it over that hurdle. Old age does give more odds out of their favor, but I have seen older gerbils push through. How is his weight doing? Is it dropping, holding steady, or even gaining weight? If he's having trouble eating you could make a little slurry of something and feed it to him, (he would also probably get a good amount of water that way, too).
Anyways, I hope he recovers, good luck to both of you!

Yes he is still trying to eat, it’s just like he’s blind with his eyes closed so struggling to get to the food

Hi, It's encouraging to hear that the seizures have stopped. Did you speak to the vet on the phone? I think it's important that your gerbil is examined by a vet in person in the next few days as it sounds like he's still quite unwell and he might need treatment. I remember you started a thread about the same gerbil the other day ( gerbilforum.proboards.com/thread/36218/gerbil). Markpd should be able to merge the threads when he's online so that all the information is in one place, as this makes it easier for those giving advice.

Sorry to hear about your gerbil's health, I hope he has picked up since, how's he doing? Btw, I'm confused by the 2 similar threads, anni6578 are you also snowball1? If you are the same person please only create 1 account (as per our rules), or if 2 different people in your household, please use 2 different email addresses. Perhaps you could delete the snowball1 account seeing as it only has 1 post, but it's up to you which one. I won't be merging the threads as the info in both is nearly the same.
