Hey all, I have gotten an amazing custom-built topper hutch thing for my gerbils. It has a shelf and ladder for them made of wood. I was recommended that I varnish them to seal the wood so they will be easy to clean later. Do any of you have recommendations for what varnish to use? Because of course my gerbils could have a chew at whatever they can access. Is there anything I should look out for so that they don't ingest anything toxic? Thanks for your help!

I look for something that says food-safe or toy-safe. Specifically, I have used Plastikote (the paint, not the spray), Rustins Wood Oil and Mod Podge. All of these will need several coats. My favourite is probably the Rustins Wood Oil as it's much better value for money than Plastikote and leaves a nicer finish than Mod Podge.

Cheers so much for your advice, we might have access to Plastikote toy-safe, very wise.
