My senior gerbil, Chicken, has been acting super weird. He has a vet appointment in 2 days.
His brother, Shark, was put down last week after a long and slow decline. Chicken was pretty skittish for a few days after Shark left, then he seemed a little more normal for a couple days and now he's acting so, so weird.
Yesterday he sat in his sand bath for 6 hours straight. He can move because I tried to pick him up to check his teeth and he scampered away from me and ran around his cage, then back to his sandbath where he remained. I wasn't able to check his teeth properly. In the evening he went underground for an hour or two, then came back out to sit in his sandbath for another 3 hours. He was also awake for an hour in the middle of the night, sitting in his sandbath.
He will sit on my lap and get pets for half an hour or more. He's tolerated a few pets in the past, but nothing like this.
He's always been a very hungry gerbil, but his appetite has seriously decreased. I offer his favourite snacks (peas, cheese, pureed pumpkin) and he'll eat a little and then stop. He will nibble at a nut or eat a few sunflower seeds sometimes when offered.
I got worried that he wasn't drinking water. He can get to his water bowl and water bottle, but he was never leaving the sand bath, so I offered him some water in a syringe and he drank several syringes full of water.
Is he depressed? Is he sick?

Bless him - sounds like something is up for sure.
The only testable/treatable thing I can think of that might suit this would be a bladder infection or kidney trouble - because I have had some gerbils sit in sand or on smooth wooden areas as it feels better for urinating on? Many an elederly gerbil would sit patiently on the roofs of their houses until finally they did the deed. Not for hours like you describe - but it just had similarities. Similarly - a waterworks problem can sometimes affect appetite as it can increase the feeling of being bloated and reduce the urge to move around.
Could easily be depressed though - there are many reports of it. Perhaps (if you believe he isn't actually ill) stick a massive pile of hand shredded kitchen roll in one corner of the enclosure (not in the way of his route from nest to sandbath to waterbottle) and see if he feels the urge to interact with it. Distraction by means of annoyance can sometimes snap them out of it. Hmm...

sorry to hear about Shark and that Chicken is acting weird. Just tempt him with food and water until you can get him checked out. Fingers crossed he will be okay and give him extra things to do so maybe it will take his mind off of things.

He was a little more active yesterday but still pretty weird. Spent a lot of time sitting on top of his house, but moved around a bit more, and I saw him go to his water bottle to drink.
I found him dead this morning (in his sand bath). I checked the video camera and he was having a morning snack around 630 am and then started having some kind of episode, jerking around for a minute or two before laying down in his sand bath.
He died 9 days after his brother, Shark.
I didn't realize he was that sick. I could have brought him to the emergency vet, but I didn't think it was an emergency and that we could wait a couple days to see our regular vet.

Oh sorry to hear this . And he went very suddenly, you couldn't have known he was days from passing away.

I'm so sorry. I've seen a lot that older gerbils will pass soon after their mate does, and I've wondered if sometimes it's almost intentional when they're that age. And I think that at his age, there wouldn't have been much you could have done. I don't think you underestimated the situation at all, sometimes it's just minor, and then escalates quickly, even to fatal points within hours.
I hope you're doing okay. I've read your past posts on Shark and Chicken, they were a truly awesome pair and I'm so sorry for their loss.
