Hello, I’m new here and don’t really know how to use this. One of my gerbils has mites and the vet gave us Revolution kittens/puppies medication for the mites. We were told to put one drop on the gerbil affected, and the vet also told us we could put it on our other gerbils as well to prevent them from getting them. However, this morning we noticed one of our gerbils (unaffected by mites) who we put it on is really lethargic, flipping around when he’s sleeping, and not eating/drinking/acting right. Has anyone had this happen before?

Hello,
Sorry to hear this. Revolution contains selamectin, which is a very similar drug to ivermectin, which although usually safe, has occasionally been associated with neurological symptoms when too much is given or in certain animals who are particularly sensitive to it. Your gerbil's symptoms do sound neurological in nature. If you still have the packaging, are you able to give the exact name of the product, and also how much you gave?
In terms of helping your gerbil, I'd recommend adjusting his cage to make things easier and safer for him. Remove any platforms or other things he might fall from and I would also remove any water bowls and use bottles only as he may fall forwards into a bowl and drown. He might find it easier to eat soft foods and I will link a post with some food ideas. It's possible that his symptoms might improve with time.
I would also suggest letting your vet know what happened. They may or may not be able to help, but it's important that they're made aware of any side effects of a treatment they prescribed.

Thank you for the advice! We only gave him a drop. He seems much better today, so we're hoping it was just a bad reaction and nothing permanent. We did end up letting the vet know, but they won't be available till tomorrow, so we will find out more soon I guess.

I'm glad to hear he is doing better. It's possible he has a sensitivity to selamectin but it will be interesting to hear what your vet says.

Out of interest, what do the instructions say for dosage for kittens and puppies?
