My son is going to help me make a topper for my new 40 gallon tank. We were talking about materials for the floor that would allow ventilation. What do you all think about peg board. Any other ideas would be appreciated. Thanks
I am getting a cage topper from a Prevue 528 cage. Going to mount that on some sort of board for the topper. That’s why we are thinking about what the best materials would be.

Looks like you got this sorted anyway - and I would say kiln-dried pine is a nice sturdy wood for creating part-platforms - and readily available in the UK at least anyway.

Pine that we get here is very inferior. It is often warped. I don't know about kiln dried pine. But thanks for this information. I can look into it as I would like to make some platforms too. |

In the UK at least, kiln-dried pine is what most hardware stores hold, also small animal houses and platforms as well as cheaper human shelving etc is all kiln-dried pine. It is untreated, easy to cut and sturdy - makes for great home gerbil DIY. I often check on chinchilla and degu products as they love ledges and shelves - and I found a company on eBay here who make shapes and platforms to order.
I know that other countries including the US/Canada don't have such good 'pine' and so there are no doubt several other untreated woods that would be just as sturdy and workable.
Regulations on (even cheaper) plywood in the EU at least changed a few years ago and are now regarded as safe for small animals (it never used to be) - so there has been an explosion in hamster and gerbil housing, platforms and lidded sandbaths online like Rodipet.
Coating them in a petsafe varnish is recommended (to prevent staining and increase longevity) but isn't essential.

I wish we had better supplies for small animals available here in the USA. |
