Excuse the crazy title, but I'm very confused! I was looking through posts in this category and it made me think about my gerbil's behavior.
So I have three sister gerbils, I don't know their age off the top of my head but they are fully grown.
Basically, two of the gerbils, Vanilla and Valencia hump each other. A LOT. It's a little bit disturbing but they're animals, what can you do. Vixen, their sister, mostly stays out of it. But these two will chase each other around, taking turns with who humps who. And to be honest... I don't think it's aggression. I've read on this forum before that if the gerbil lifts its tail up to give the other gerbil access to their privates, then it's not really dominance and is just gerbil shenanigans.
I've also never been able to tell which one in the group was dominant, so I'll keep my eyes open to see. My guess is that Vixen is the dominant one and since the other two girls are below her in the hierarchy, they don't really care about having dominance over each other.
Also, when do gerbils go into heat and how can you tell? I think when either Vanilla or Valencia is in heat the humping gets worse. Besides the humping, they have no other possible signs of aggression. They'll share food, sleep together, etc. I never see them grooming each other because I think Vixen is the only one that does that... or maybe they just groom each other when I can't see them. I don't know. I just want to make sure all is well between them and that they're just doing this strange little habit for funsies.

Does this follow any kind of pattern e.g every four days?
It sounds like they might be heat, which usually happens every fourth day. Sometimes mounting can be an early sign of a declan, but it would generally be one gerbil always mounting another, rather than taking turns.
