I went to a review and saw a better picture of it. My opinion is the type 'screen' they use would be bad for a gerbils feet. I am sure others more experienced will chime in.

I was thinking of lining the bottom with something else. You could do that, but I would go over the reviews. One person said the paint flaked off after two months and rusted, of course that is with a water tank. If you like it and line it with a safe floor, it might work but the 8 inch height would limit what you could do with it and it looks like it is only about half of the width of a 40 gallon tank. So you lose space for the gerbils to run around. I also have a 40 gallon tank. Another reviewer said their turtles toe got caught in the mesh. I know you would line the floor but I don't know if gerbils might try to climb the side mesh and then you may have a leg getting caught. And that ramp opening takes a lot of floor space in that topper. To me there are too many negatives for gerbils. This is my opinion only. It also depends on what you want to do in a topper. I have my wheel in my topper and the water bottle. I don't know how you would do a water bottle with this topper unless it is a free standing water bottle. This topper isn't tall enough for a wheel the right size for a gerbil. If you have the wheel and water bottle in the tank then you don't have to worry about that for the topper. Another thought is with only 8 inches high when you open that big lid they may jump out. Personally I like a front opening door that is about 8 inches wide. This is all my opinion. I personally don't like this topper for gerbils from what I have learned about gerbils. Others may have better insight. And I know how hard it is to find a ready built topper for a 40 gallon tank. I had the same problem. So I ended up asking my son to help build me a topper using the top wire part of the Prevue 528 hamster cage and placing it on a wooden base that fit over the whole tank top. Total cost was just under $200. I know not everyone has the money, tools or the ability to make a topper. I know I didn't either and I was fortunate to have a son nearby that is a wood worker and handyman. There are people on You tube that show you how they made their toppers. I got ideas from them. I searched high and low for a good ready made topper for a 40 gallon breeder tank. I found nothing for gerbils. I hope you find something that works for you and your gerbils. |

I agree with your reasons and glad you pointed that out. Petco has a topper for a 40 gallon but it's also the same height of 8 or 9 inches. I don't like the etsy ones either. They will be in my family room so I definitely want it to look uniform & somewhat decent. I will just start with the 50 gallon half & half set up with shelfs until I figure something out. I just figured if I'm spending $35 on a hinged screen top I should figure out a topper option before wasting money. |

I don't like the etsy ones either. I think they are very unattractive. Mine isn't that attractive, but better than Etsy ones. Here is mine. Mine is also in our family room.  |
