In the last few months Sparkle has put quite alot of weight on. I thought it was just the food what was making him like it. He exersizes and still stays the same. Well lastnight when i got back from wok he was just on his middle layer just sitting there doing nothing and while he was there he let me stroke him in his cage (he would never do that). This morning i found him in his tissue box doing the same (nothing). I watched him attempt to drink but he was getting nothing out. because he couldnt push the ball hard enough. I have got Sparkle with me still in his tissue box i have out tissues inside to make him more comfy. Also which i think may be related, last week i put my hand in to give him a tp roll and he just came straight back up and bit me. He has never ever bit me before. Sparkle is 2 years and 3 months old. Taking him to a vet is not possible as there is non within 20 miles of me which will deal with Gerbils Thanks for any adivce (in advance) Ame x

Unfortunately it looks like you MUST take him to the vets. If they seem to suddenly gain weight could mean there are problems with his heart or other organs and he could get alot of fluid retention which will make him seem boated or he could have problems with breathing. Either way, him staying still not wanting to be touched means he is in some kind of pain and gerbils wont show minor pain.

Im sorry but you need to go to a vets, what part of the UK do you live in?
I live in Greatbaddow, which is in Chelmsford and their is a RSPA charity clinic (free consultaions etc).
You seriously need to find a way to go to a vets, bus, taxi, train?? Lift from family?
As Malabu said it could be something bad, and you need to get him checked out!

My vet is over an hour way from my house. It is inconvienent but they are a great group. They have a vet, that specilies in small pocket pets and other small pets ranging from mice, hamsters, gerbils, rats, guinee pigs, rabbits, ferrets, ect ect. I have asked that if I had any questions reguarding urgency and care if I could call a certin number at any time, she gave me her cell number for buisness calls. This is on her at all times. I have called her only once since their visit from when they were babies, but she still remembered me. If I ever had an emergency, I already know all the methods to take to prepare for the trip to the vet. It is a possiability that if something serious ever did happen, she might not make to the vet on time. But it is better to try to get to a long distance vet, then do nothing at all. Saying a vet is just not an option is unfortunatly not a very encourging responce. Consider buses, taxies, or car pooling with someone with another pet. Maybe a vet in your semi local area does house visits. I hope the little guy is ok, it must be dreadful watching him be so miserable with no explination as to why.

Sparkle has been fine this morning and all of today. He has been eating and running around as normal im so happy. I have only just got back from work and have read the meesages. he has been chewing tp rolls and everything, I think he may have felt ill as we have started to have the central heating on and he is right by it, so he is going hot and cold. He is being moved first thing tomorrow away from the radiator before the central heating comes back on (its been off the w.end) But last winter he was in the same place with the central heating on and he was fine. anyhoo im still moving him. I have put in my postcode in the site and it comes up with "The postcode you have entered has not been found. The search engine needs a full Royal Mail postcode (e.g. SW1P 2AF) to return its results." (and yes i have checked i put it in right.) By the way, Thanks for all of your help, im not a newbie and i do realise he prob did need a vet, but it really is not possible atm. I will continue looking for a vet and looking into transport just incase. Ame x

Hi - glad he's feeling better. You must be very happy and relieved.
The search on that site works if you put in your nearest town too, if the postcode thing doesn't work. Just in case you need it in future.

Hey - Glad to hear that he is fine now, and has recovered. I would find a vet near to you, even a hour away as some gerbil owners are, and keep their number written down for next time or just in case situation. It's always handy to know, if you need it you've got it ! Glad to hear that hes a fighter and wont give in easily! xoxox
