I tried to keep a sand bath in my tanks but the gerbils just bury it in with the Aspen. They do use it for a potty when I first put it in but then it is just something else to bury. One of my pairs actually kicks all the sand out of the dish.
How do you all keep the bedding out and the sand in?
Also, I find that the best toys are the ones that you find around the house.... like a coconut, twigs, rocks. The ones I buy, I waste my money on because they don't play with them.

They quite like chewing on sea shells too. I put a nice flat rock in each tank for them to cool off on in the summer. They love it. Other than that, they all get all our cardboard boxes and tubes and love them. Some like pine cones, but I make sure to freeze them for several days first to kill any bugs that might be in them.

You could just use a small porceilan dish too. They can't chew on it and they can't tip it over.

Mine did not so much tip or chew but kick the sand out and bury it . Sandy, Pine cones?? Is there too much sap in them? I have a bunch in the yard and it would be great.

I'm not sure why everyone is using the plastic potty when a ceramic bowl works just as well. It is easier to clean and they can't chew it. Why risk having your gerbil die of painful impaction? Just put a little sand (or any substrate that isn't similar to the bedding -- but most definitely prefer sand) and you're ready!

sweetie, i had the same problem with shavings in the sand bowl until i put it up higher. As some people noted on an earlier post, the gerbs seem to like to pee in the highest place in the cage (mine certainly do). I have my toilet on a very solid wooden box turned on its side, and the bottom of the bowl is very heavy, so they can't tip the bowl over or knock it off the box. They love it. I have a separate sand bath (with more expensive 'reptisand') that i put in their cage for 10 minutes for bath time and then remove.
