haha.
I don't know about the litter box. I'm guessing they'll just chew it.
I have a small kritter keeper filled with chinchilla sand. They use that as a litter box. Makes cleaning the cage easy. All ya got to do is sift it. ;D

If it's plastic they ussually chew it into very littel pieces! ;D It might work for hamsters, but I think not for Mongolian gerbils!
As J said, you can use chinchilla, or bird sand in something, maybe even in that litter box, for as long it will survive ;D! My gerbils use their sand bath as their toilet! This way I have to clean their sand bath a lot, but not their whole tank as often, and I like that very much. ;D
The plastic can cause problems in their intestens, however in my opinion the risk is not very high! But some will disaggree with me.

They acutally used the little litter box? I was thinking about getting one for my Gerbils when I get them, but I don't think they'd use it. So..you just put it in there and they used it?! That would realllyyy help with cleaning the cage.

I think they prefer to use sand as their toilet! Because they will also do their things in their sand bath! Mine do! So when you place sand in such a litter box, it seems likely that they will use it.

So when you place sand in such a litter box, it seems likely that they will use it. Mine use it as their toilet and they also bring tissue into it to sleep and they use it as a toy to dig in. And sometimes they'd roll around in it with turds in it. Maybe I just have scumbag gerbils? lol Anyone ever try putting 2 sandboxes in the tank? I'm wondering if they'll use that one as they're litter box and the other to bathe or sleep in....

they will cause gerbils naturally leave one certain area as their bathroom spot, although at the same time they may not just because they may decide that they want to make their bathroom spot their lounge spot as well and just forget the other one...

My gerbils, both of which I rescued from bad pet store conditions, actually litter trained themselves as pups of just 5 weeks(Sandy) and 4 weeks(Sunny)! I do not have a problem with them chewing it. I use bitter apple spray to make it taste nasty.

I've been thinking about getting mine a potty too, but we'll see. As far as your "Squeeky wheel" goes, rub some veggie oil on it. It's safe if they decide to lick it. I have 1 squeeky wheel. I lube it up every 3 days or so.... ;D
